The 5th annual Youth Day of Caring will be taking place on Friday May 21st.

We are organizing this event because we know from past years that youth value volunteering their time and skills to give back to the community. It will also be a great way for students to meet their high school peers from across the city and experience the impact of what can be accomplished by working together.

Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are invited to team up with United Way to complete hands on, meaningful projects in the William Whyte neighbourhood. Registration packages have been sent to Winnipeg High Schools, please contact the Youth Relations Manager at United Way of Winnipeg 477-5360 ext. 272 if you’d like more information.

More than 140 students from 19 local high schools showed outstanding community pride and responsibility by taking part in United Way of Winnipeg’s 4th annual Youth Day of Caring on Friday, May 22, 2009. The record turnout brings total participation in the event to almost 450 young people over the past four years.

Working alongside staff and volunteers from 11 United Way agency partners, students spent the day picking up litter, painting, gardening, cleaning and organizing – whatever they could to support non-profit organizations that support Winnipeggers.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people from all over the city to connect with one another and take action to improve our community,” said Justin Cloutier, Chair of United Way’s Youth Day of Caring Committee. “For many, it’s an introduction to a lifelong volunteer relationship with these organizations.”

The day began at 8:30am with a Welcome Breakfast at St. John’s Leisure Centre, featuring a spectacular dance performance by Sisler’s Most Wanted. Students were then transported by bus to assigned non-profit agencies including:

Volunteers were treated to a delicious pizza lunch courtesy of Santa Lucia. At the end of the day, everyone returned to St. John’s Leisure Centre for a special wrap up celebration hosted by HOT 103 morning personality Ace Burpee.

Every year, hundreds of youth throughout Winnipeg make significant contributions to our community through United Way. As volunteers, participants and leaders, their energy and enthusiasm is shaping a brighter future for everyone as they set an example for all to follow. Thank you!

A special shout out to Trevor and Adam for acting as photographer and videographer. Thanks also to all our sponsors for making the annual Youth Day of Caring a huge success!

Every year, United Way’s Day of Caring program brings hundreds of volunteers out into the community where they work together with non profit agencies to complete meaningful, hands-on projects. The annual Youth Day of Caring is no different, except that it all happens on one action-packed day! Youth from high schools across the city join together to get their hands dirty and complete community action projects that have an impact on dozens of agencies.

The annual Youth Day of Caring was launched in June 2006. Every year, it is organized by the Day of Caring Committee and members of varous youth volunteer committees at United Way.

The Youth Day of Caring is a great way for students to connect with their peers, the United Way of Winnipeg, and the community at large.

Justin Cloutier was one of the organizers of the 2008 Youth Day of Caring. He wrote an article about the event that you can read by following this link.
