Congratulations to the planning committee on a successful 2010 Student Leadership Conference!

On Thursday, November 4th, 150 students from 24 Winnipeg high schools met at Canad Inns Garden City where they participated in activities and group discussions designed by members of the Student Leadership Conference Planning Committee:

The day began with a game of Human Bingo, where students were encouraged to learn about the other students in attendance. As it turned out, almost everyone in the room was involved in at least one committee at their school – and most people play a musical instrument!

Students moved on to a number of workshops focusing on public speaking, time management, project planning, team building and Peg (an interactive website exploring statistics about the health of our community).

Just before lunch, students participated in a passport activity, connecting them with information and resources about opportunities for young leaders right here in Winnipeg.

After a delicious lunch and before returning to their workshops, James Struthers dropped in to perform for the group and engaged them in an effort to win a copy of his CD.

Thank yous

A very special thanks goes to Great-West Life, the sponsor of SLC 2010. Great-West Life has sponsored the conference for several years and is a generous supporter of United Way of Winnipeg and of youth leadership development across the city.

Thanks to Canad Inns Garden City for welcoming us into their space and serving us a delicious lunch.

Thanks to Rogers for donating the prizes and giveaways.

Thanks to our volunteer photographer, Morgan Coates, a grade 10 student from Gimli High School, who did a fantastic job capturing the day.

Thanks to James Struthers for sharing your music and energy!

Thanks to the students and teachers who attended the conference. The day was a big success because everyone participated so enthusiastically!

We hope that the 2010 Student Leadership Conference inspired everyone to think about their capabilities as young leaders in our community and that you all continue creating opportunities for a better life for everyone.

If you weren’t at the conference and would like to learn more about how to get connected to United Way, please call the Youth Relations Manager at 924-4265.

Interested in volunteering with United Way? Join the Student Leadership Conference Planning Committee!

The United Way Student Leadership Conference is an annual event that is organized by youth, for youth. Students in grades 9-12 meet and exchange ideas with their peers from other schools, they take part in workshops on leadership and community action, and they learn about important services that help countless people in Winnipeg. The conference has gotten bigger and better over the past few years because of the enthusiastic participation and thoughtful feedback of the students who have been there. Last November, close to 200 students from dozens of local schools attended the conference, which was organized by High School students from all over the city.

This year, we’re looking for more young people to help plan and host the event, which will take place on Thursday November 4th, 2010.

In 2005, United Way started to offer something new that’s geared toward younger students in Grades 7 and 8 who are interested in learning about leadership and community volunteerism.

The Get Something Started Workshop is a touring workshop that’s facilitated by high school students. It was created by high school students, too. The purpose of the workshop is to:

Reinforce the idea of giving back to the community;

Connect younger students with high school role models;

Help younger students come up with some community-building ideas of their own.

The ideal audience is 20-30 students at one time.

How to bring the workshop to your school…
If you’re in Grade 7 or 8, or if you’re a teacher of Grade 7 or 8 students, you can bring the workshop to your school. Just call United Way at 477-5360 and ask for the Manager of Youth Relations!
