SJR students participate in a Day of Caring in North Point DouglasAfter a busy but refreshing summer, we’re gearing up for another exciting year of activities here at United Way. Here are a couple of announcements to let you know what’s coming up:

  • We’ve hired a new Program Manager! Leigh-Anne Bowles has been working on the Youth Relations Strategy for just a couple of weeks, and she’s looking forward to working closely with all of the youth volunteers at United Way.
  • Our annual United Way Student Leadership Conference is coming up on Tuesday, November 4th. Here’s some general info about the conference (please stay tuned to this site for details about SLC 2008!) If you already know you want to attend (or if you’re a teacher and you know you want to send a few students), please give Leigh-Anne a call at 477-5360 ext. 232.
  • The Youth Relations Council is hoping to build on your enthusiasm for community involvement by creating some kind of United Way youth network. If you’re interested in being part of a large group and having access to volunteer and leadership development opportunities, please let us know by calling Leigh-Anne.
  • The Shaw United Way Youth Connections program is still going strong. You can apply for a grant of up to $1000 to help with the costs of your youth-initiated, youth-driven community action project. For more information, click here to learn how to apply for a Youth Connections grant.
  • The annual Youth Day of Caring will happen again this year, sometime in May. (If you’re interested in participating in a smaller Day of Caring, like the St. John’s-Ravenscourt students in the picture above, let us know.)

These activities are just a few of the ways that young people can get involved in creating opportunities for a better life for everyone. We’ll keep you posted as new ideas and new announcements come up.

All the best in the new school year!
