From January 24th to March 28th, the Anishinabe Pride Female Basketball Club will be hosting a junior sport clinic for students from Shaughnessy Park School between the ages of 7 to 10. The girls planning, organizing and hosting the clinic are themselves between the ages of 12 to 14. The project idea came from the members of the Anishinabe Pride Female Basketball Club. They recognize the value of participating in extra curricular activities and want to give back to their community.
This group of young leaders is developing basketball drills and activities for their younger counterparts based on the skills and knowledge they are gaining from participating in their basketball club. The project is meant to engage local children in positive after school activities, and teach them nutrition, healthy living and team work. Through this project, the girls on the project team hope to learn program development, facilitation skills, budgeting, work ethics, team building, and leadership qualities.
This project was made possible in part by the financial assistance provided by the Shaw United Way Youth Connections. Youth Connections is a funding program for Winnipeg-based projects that reflect genuine youth volunteer ownership of and leadership in their design, completion, and evaluation. The young leaders on the Youth Connections Council provide grants of up to $1000 to eligible projects.
