Dakota Collegiate (Operation Rudolph)

December 2005 (Amount granted: $1000)
Dakota’s Black & Gold Society planned and hosted a Christmas party for children from low-income areas surrounding their high school. This was their fifth year of Youth Connections funding.

Kelvin High School (Kelvin Bridges Initiative)

December 2005 (Amount granted: $1000)
Over 150 high school students participated in planning and hosting their sixth annual Christmas party, inviting about 160 students from Norquay School to hang out with them for the morning. The purpose of the project – on top of just having some fun – was to “provide an opportunity for friendships and ongoing mentorship between Kelvin and Norquay.”

St. James Collegiate (Brooklands Literacy Project)

February 2006 (Amount granted: $775)
St. James students who live in the Brooklands area of Winnipeg will return to the elementary school in their neighborhood to cook breakfast and read to the children there. In the past, they’ve left each child with a book of their own, and they plan to do it again.

St. James Collegiate (Homework Mentor Club)

December 2005 – June 2006 (Amount granted: $789.50)
Once a week after school, senior high students go to Stevenson Britannia School to assist students with homework and act as mentors.

Somali Youth Association (African Youth Camp)

December 2005 (Amount granted: $832)
Students from Kelvin High School partnered with the Manitoba Somali Association to offer a 2-day camp that brought young children together to be educated about drugs, violence and other issues that were affecting recent immigrants and refugees in the inner city.

Miles Macdonell Collegiate (Friends Around the World)

January – May 2006 (Amount granted: $790)
For the second year in a row, Miles Mac’s Friendship Committee designed their project to help EAL students feel welcome and part of the school community through lunch time and after school activities.

Victor Mager Boys and Girls Club (Multicultural Celebration)

March 2006 (Amount granted: $1000)
Regular members of the Victor Mager Winnipeg Boys & Girls Club invited community members to an event in celebration of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event included multicultural performances and a buffet featuring ethnic dishes representative of the St. Vital community. This was the fourth time that Youth Connections has funded their project.

Kelvin High School (Camp Ooga Booga)

March 2006 (Amount granted: $1000)
A core group of students, assisted by another 15 – 20 of their peers, offered a free day camp for low-income families during spring break. Approximately 45 children attended this camp, which has now been operating for two years.

Miles Macdonell Collegiate (For a Better Tomorrow)

May/June 2006 (Amount granted: $1000)
Students in Miles Mac’s Career Quest program provided free labor to repair a home owned by a low-income resident in their community. Youth Connections funding helped them to pay for supplies such as paint, lumber and landscaping material.

P.A.S.S. Youth Committee (Aboriginal Youth Conference)

June 2006 (Amount granted: $1000)
Youth members of the Selkirk, MB P.A.S.S. (Promoting Aboriginal Student Success) Committee organized and hosted their fourth youth conference, an annual celebration of aboriginal cultures that focuses on showcasing successful aboriginal students and encouraging youth to stay in school.

Southeast Education Centre (Cultural Awareness Day)

June 2006 (Amount granted: $1000)
Senior High students at this aboriginal high school hosted several hundred students and community members for a day of performances and activities designed to connect the school to their larger community and help students to celebrate aboriginal culture.

350th Cadets – Girl Guides of Canada (Kingston Underpass Mural Project)
July/August 2006 (Amount granted: $750)
Girl Guides in Winnipeg’s St. Vital community decided to paint a mural on an underpass in their neighbourhood. The mural will depict girls of all ages and nationalities doing acts of community service. (UPDATE: This project actually happened over the summer of 2007 – they ran out of good weather in 2006!)
